Thinking of selling? Your bathroom is one of the two best places to invest (the other being the kitchen). Thinking of staying? The bathroom is also an investment in your own happiness. How long you plan to stay (six months, or 20 years) will dictate how much you budget for your bathroom update.
The two terms, renovating and remodeling are often used interchangeably, but have completely different meanings for interior designers and builders. What is the difference?
According to its Latin roots renovate means “new again”. This involves taking something that is it a little worn or shabby, and then restoring it to original (or better) condition. That can be accomplished with a bright (but neutral) paint job on the walls and cabinetwork to lighten a dark area, or installing new handles or draw pulls.
Remodeling, on the other hand, means getting rid of that ancient, shallow, and almost useless bathtub and replacing it with a deep Soaker-style tub, a spa-type tub with bubbles, or eliminating it entirely in favor of a modern glass shower.
Burying that 60 year old linoleum under some resilient vinyl flooring can make the floor more comfortable to walk on, slip-resistant for safety, and (let’s behonest) considerably more attractive. If your renovations want to go the fine porcelain
tile route instead, consider electrical or hot water underfloor heating to keep them pleasantly warm for bare feet.
Renovations can also take the form of having the bathtub reglazed, or installing a new replacement directly into the old tub (without removing it) to use its fittings without the need for re-plumbing the entire installation. This is usually accompanied by an acrylic or plastic liner, often stark white to imply cleanliness, or simulated tile, which is then simply glued in place with adhesive over the top of the old surface.
Of course there is nothing quite like handset-and-finished bathroom tiles. Consider this three-piece set of a neutral beige indented-square with two oval separating elements finished in mother-of- pearl. That is so opulent and eyecatching that people will visit just to use your bathroom!
It is hard to argue with such fundamental beauty. It is also practical, durable, and easy to care for, just like all bathroom tile finishes. That is what you can expect to find at one of the finest tile stores in Houston, here at Floors and Up.
Of course our bag of tricks includes natural soapstone, granite, or marble countertops as well as stunning synthetic quartz countertops. They are just the thing to make expensive spas owners jealous, or worried that you are going to steal their
And for those vertical or horizontal surfaces, such as walls and ceilings, where you don’t want tile or wainscoting, we use durable, high quality paints, especially designed for warm, humid environments. Of course those areas should have proper
ventilation to control that, so we can install exhaust fans to safeguard your investment, but keep the weather outside, and prevent incursions by local wildlife.
